World’s Greatest Birthday Cake

Published by admin at 10:06 pm under Food & Wine

We’ve known our former neighbor Liza since she was about six. Well, she’s graduated from college and turned 22 this month. She was always a great baker (including lots of summers and holiday breaks working in the Deer Valley bakery). And her father Richard is an incredible chef. We all like to out-do each other with the cover recipes from Bon Appetit! Liza really outdid herself for this birthday, baking up what was truly the world’s greatest birthday cake. In fact, we all agreed, it was even better looking than the June 2006 cover of Bon Appetit. Checkout the orange layer cake with buttercream frosting and seasonal berries.

If you’re looking to give this one a try yourself, plan on taking some time — it will take a good part of your day. Liza says the batter is really, really dense which was a bit of a challenge. But it’s worth all the time. This is a great summer cake, with the berries one of the keys. Liza added in some orange marmalade (straight from her trip to Italy) in the inside frosting.

All in all, this was an awesome cake. Check it out at epicurious.com.
