Sunday at Holmenkollen

Fans in Trees, originally uploaded by tomkellyphoto.

Some took the train. Some came by skis or camped out for days. And many walked with their families the 8-10 kilometers from Oslo up the mountainside to Holmenkollen. They wore knickers and backpacks, with all of them carrying Norwegian flags. And all brought with them the culture of a nation truly built on the outdoors as a way of life. It was Sunday at Holmenkollen. And it dwarfed our Super Bowl.

First Snow

The first snow blanketed the Wasatch Saturday, dropping measurable snow from the mountain tops to the valley. Up in Guardsman Pass, a few hardy skiers and snowboarders logged a first day. Zach and I encountered a pair skiing down the Guardsman Road after a day hiking up to the Snake Creek area of Brighton and getting in some first runs.

Tubing at Soldier Hollow

We’ve been meaning to checkout the snow tubing at Soldier Hollow for a few years. Tonight, we finally did it, along with Carole’s brother Nick and family from Indianapolis. It was an absolute blast! It’s a first class operation from start to finish!

It’s Still Snowing!

It simply won’t stop snowing! Even Fr. Bob, our Catholic pastor and good ski friend, has stopped praying for snow. Yes, the skiing is great. But winter has become rather arduous out here in Silver Creek, near Park City, Utah.

Big Snow Year

It simply won’t stop! Well, it was a somewhat slow start to the snow season with sketchy conditions through the end of November. But we now have more snow in our yard than at any time we can remember. There’s at least 3-4 feet of settled snow in most of the yard. And the plow mounds go nearly halfway up the biggest pine tree in the front yard. So if you’re thinking of a ski trip to Park City, this would be the year!

New Year in Silver Creek

Happy New Year! It’s been a cold, frosty, snow New Year here in Silver Creek near Park City. With two to three feet of light, fresh new snow, it was wonderful snowshoeing right out the back door as the sun set on New Year’s Eve. It was a perfect opportunity for Hannah and her new friend Ivy to try it for the first time. As expected, Mac the wonder dog joined the girls for a fun outing in the sagebrush of Silver Creek.
